Value Of Value In Painting

Posted On Jun 21, 2021 |

Hi,
Value is of great value in painting!

Confused?

Value is defined as the relative darkness or lightness of a shape in a painting. Darker the shape, darker is the value.

Value, Hue and Saturation are the characteristics of color.
It is said that value does the work and color gets the credit!

Value does main 3 things:

  1. Gives Form

Value gives form or dimension to the object
Look at this drawing, The 3 dimensional feel is created by the relative lightness or darkness of various areas on this apple.

  2. Suggests Depth

Value suggests distance or depth in the painting.
Farther the object, lighter is the value, like a distant mountain in any landscape painting.

  3. Creates Mood

It creates mood in the painting.
Higher the contrast in the painting, dramatic the mood. Lesser the contrast, duller is the mood.

All these things are crucial in making in any painting successful and memorable. Not a small feat!

So, next time you paint something, remember to get the values correct.

Now I want to hear from you. Let me know what value you got from this post! Share your thoughts in the comments below.

Happy Painting!
